PROLOGUE — The Night Everything Changed

The night Vedika Malhotra decided she would never love again, it was raining.

Not the gentle kind.

The sky was furious.

Rain hammered against the windows of the old house while thunder shook the walls, but none of it was louder than the sound of her own heartbeat.

She stood barefoot in the middle of the bedroom, her trembling fingers wrapped around the edge of the table.

Her wedding bangles were broken.

Glass glittered across the floor.

And there was blood on her wrist.

"Please..."

The word barely escaped her lips.

She didn't know who she was begging anymore.

Him?

God?

Or herself?

A tear slipped down her cheek.

She had once believed that a husband was supposed to be the safest person in the world.

She had been wrong.

Terribly wrong.

The man she had trusted with her heart had turned her home into a prison.

Every promise had become a threat.

Every I love you had eventually sounded like a warning.

And tonight, something inside Vedika finally broke.

Not her body.

Not her heart.

Something deeper.

Her ability to believe.

She slowly removed her mangalsutra.

Her fingers shook as she stared at the black beads resting in her palm.

"This isn't love," she whispered.

A bitter smile touched her lips.

"This is survival."

She placed it on the table.

And walked away.

She didn't know that this would be the last night she would ever spend in that house.

She didn't know that years later, she would stand in front of another man and hear another marriage proposal.

She didn't know that the man waiting for her would have eyes just as broken as hers.

And she certainly didn't know that he would have a little girl who would change everything.

Across the city, another broken heart was making a promise.

Ishaan Shekhawat stood alone in the dark nursery of his three-year-old daughter.

Advika was asleep in her little bed, one tiny hand wrapped around a stuffed rabbit.

Ishaan stood beside her, watching her breathe.

His phone kept ringing.

He ignored it.

His family had been talking about marriage for months.

Advika needs a mother.

You can't raise her alone forever.

You need someone beside you.

He was tired of hearing it.

Because no woman could replace the person he had lost.

And no woman would ever be allowed close enough to destroy his daughter.

He leaned down and kissed Advika's forehead.

"I promise you," he whispered, "I'll never let anyone hurt you."

His jaw tightened.

Not again.

Never again.

He walked out of the nursery and closed the door.

Neither Vedika nor Ishaan knew that fate had already begun tying their lives together.

Two strangers.

Two shattered hearts.

Two people who had stopped believing in love.

And one little girl standing between them.

Months later, when Vedika would finally walk into Ishaan's house as his wife, she would believe she was entering another marriage she would have to survive.

Ishaan would believe he was simply bringing a mother figure into his daughter's life.

Neither would understand the truth.

Because sometimes love doesn't arrive gently.

Sometimes it enters like a storm.

It tears down every wall you've built.

It touches every wound you've hidden.

And then, when you least expect it...

it teaches you that home was never a place.

Home was a person.
